John Taylor Collegiate
Saturday, May 17th - 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Free

Participants will be divided up into teams to compete in a bizarre array of fun activities for the right to call themselves JT50 Gym Riot Reunion Champions. Want to relive memories of years past when you participated in a good, old-fashioned gym riot at JT?  How about creating new ones with fellow alum in the AB gym on Saturday!  The gym riot, also known as a gym blast, is still a riotous amount of fun for alum of any age.  Hit the pancake breakfast then meet your teammates and head to your corner as you get set to go head to head (to head to head) in a Food Frenzy relay, race in the Human Centipede and compete in the Snowball Fight. Free gym riot t-shirts in your team's colour provided to participants who register by May 1, 2014.

Connect with Your Classmates - JT50 Can Help

If you look on the www.jt50.ca  website you can see all of the grads who are registered to receive email updates.  While we can't provide you with their email addresses, we can forward an email on your behalf so that you can connect before the reunion and coordinate your table for the Saturday dinner. Just email us at info@jt50.ca and tell us:
  1. Which grads you want us to email on your behalf - it can be individual names or an entire year or years.
  2. Your email address that you want them to respond to.
  3. The content of the email that you want us to send on your behalf.
Response to this service has been great and we have been able to connect lots of old friends.  Given the volume, we ask that if you know the email address of your classmate that you email them directly.

If you know someone that hasn't registered at www.jt50.ca, send them a link to the site and remind them to register. You can use our email tool at http://www.jt50.ca/tell-a-friend/.

69-72 Basketball!

In the Fall of 1969, I came to John Taylor from Regina. I was the big lanky kid from Saskatchewan who didn't want to leave and make new friends. When I went to register, Mr Bridges said the basketball coach was a man named, Wayne Ruff.
Initially I thought he was intense, but soon learned he had an intense love for the game and to help the team win.. He taught me more about the game in months than I had learned in Saskatchewan in several years. Our goal was to beat the Westwood "wood ticks" as they had been provincial champs for the past couple years. When this was done in 71-72, I thought we had achieved the best. What was really taught was hard work, loyalty, friendship, teamwork and values. All good life lessons.
Thank you Wayne! You made a good impact on my life as well as many others.
I hope more people have "balcony people" to help them in life.

We are the champions!

I had a lot of great memories at John Taylor but the best moment for me was when the buzzer sounded at the end of the 1994 Varsity Girls Provincial AAAA Basketball Championship and the Pipers were victorious! Having the opportunity to compete in sport with your best friends (who remain that to this day) is a special thing. Being able to accomplish something together like winning a championship is even more so. I am sure that the members of all Piper championship teams would agree. I am also proud to say that many of the members of our team still get together with Coach Simpson every year to celebrate our accomplishment and relive many of our fond memories. And we will again this March, for the 20th time. Go Pipers!!

Piper Athletics

I was happy to read the Metro One article on April 2nd about the JTC Pipers boys' basketball team winning the provincial championships this March (and the hockey team winning the City and Provincial Championships last March). What an exciting time for the students and staff. I could not help be reminded of Piper championship teams of the 90's including volleyball, basketball and hockey as well as a variety of championships in curling, badminton, etc. Athletes like Jana Taylor, Lara Asplin, Susie Laping, Trevor Dineen, Keith and Kevin Goetz, Brad Unger and coaches like Carol Simpson, Al Friesen, Steve Cara and many more who wore Piper green and gold with pride. I am glad to see the winning tradition continues at JT.

Construction and first day

Back in late 1963 a group of us would frequently check out the construction of our new school. When the workers were not there we walked on the gymnasium floor before the walls were in place. It was an impressive huge sheet of concrete.
On the first day there were no desks and we all had to sit on the floor. The lunch room and vending machines were under the gym.

Only 63 days to JT50 - Time to get Organized!

Greetings!

Hello Alumni and Staff Members!
The JT50 Reunion Committee has partnered with EventIQ to provide you with flexibility in organizing your reunion experience.  You can buy tickets for the Friday Social and Saturday Dinner & Dance, purchase JT50 memorabilia and register for the numerous free events and activities.  The site allows you to make multiple visits to purchase tickets or confirm attendance at any of the events.

The main event of the weekend is the Saturday Night Fever dinner and dance to be held at the RBC Convention Centre on Saturday, May 17th commencing at 6:00 PM.  Bring your dancing shoes and prepare to stay up late!  A few important points when buying your tickets:

Select your table
When you purchase tickets for this event you can select the table that you will sit at.  If others are at the table you will be able to see their names.  Once you have booked a table, you can let your friends know your table number and they can join you - provided that seats are available - as availability is first come, first serve.

Purchase tickets and confirm names later
You can purchase extra tickets (even whole tables) and let us know who will be joining you later. Simply enter "TBD" as the first and last names to complete the purchase of the extra tickets and email Arlene Billeck at babilleck@shaw.ca once you know who will be sitting there.  This is a great way to make sure that you are seated with friends and family.

Change Names
Provided you purchased the tickets, you can change the names of your dinner guest by emailing Arlene Billeck at babilleck@shaw.ca with the changes.

Tables are beginning to book quickly and we expect that table choices will start to become limited.

 JT50 Story Hub

The following is a story from the JT50 Story Hub. Go to www.jt50.ca/storyhub/ to read more or submit your own story about your JT days.

School Spirit

Back in the late 70's the student council had come up with Home Room of the Year to help build school spirit. Homerooms would vie for the honour by decorating their rooms on special occasions and doing things that related to their group. One year my homeroom was the senior band comprised of about 80 students. (Obviously, attendance reporting was one of the challenges.) The SC decided homerooms should try and come up with a slogan that would be emblematic of their group. I cajoled the band for several weeks to come up with some ideas. Although we had many talented students in that group we had difficultly coming up with a good idea. Some of the ideas that did surface were not really appropriate. One of the more popular TV shows of the time was 'Three's Company'. We finally decided on 'Three's Company.....but 80's an Orgy!'. Surprisingly, our class was named Home Room of the Year!

Tickets for Saturday Night Fever are on sale now at www.jt50.ca.  When you purchase tickets you will have the opportunity to select your table and who you will be sitting with.  There are still tables of 10 available so you can still purchase a whole table under your name and let us know who will be sitting there once you arrange things with friends and family.  As tickets continue to sell, buying a whole table will become impossible.

Common Room - JT Basement

Before the internet and cell phones. Way before email and Facebook. For many of us the common room in the JT basement was the social hub. A place to find out what was going on, when and where. More than a few skips due to the spirited dialogue and fresh cinnamon buns. The ambiance of a cave and the vibe of an old school Manitoba Social. Not a lot of studying or homework. Would go back in a minute.
